Barely two years after residents of Mumias East rose up enmasse on Ninth of August 2022 to dispatch, consummate and fulfill their Constitutional mandate of electing the leadership they preferred and valued in the just concluded general elections; aspirations to unseat the incumbent Legislator Hon Peter Kalerwa Salasya are well already in the books.
Mumias East Sub-County; mooted to be a hot bed of Western politics that shapes and determine who bags the leadership mantle both at the County and National stages; has witnessed an unprecedented interests in the member of National Assembly seat in the recent days.
Questions on everyone lips right now and what has set tongues wagging is: Why the surge in the number of leaders to oust Hon Salasya?
Is he not worth his weight in gold for the position he is holding?
Well;
Just to whet your appetite on why this seat has garnered interest from all nooks and crannies that are eligible to vie as stipulated in our Constitutional tenets; let me skip the skin and go directly to the beef by pointing out the pros, cons and controversies that have continually acted as smoke screens that wrecked havoc in Hon Peter's short lived tenure as Mumias East Constituency boss.
Born and bred from Lubinu Lusheya Ekero Ward in a not so affluent family; Hon PK, as he has been christened by the vast populace here, was brought up in tough environment. Life to him was a vale of tears or rather a tough row to hoe.
Growing up; according to an Interview conducted last year after being sworn in as the defacto Mumias East Legislator by Pulse Kenya; Hon PK implored that his dream was to be a Leader or a Pastor.
His first stance at elective leadership was when he was at Egerton University. It all ended in premium tears as he never sufficed.
Fast forward to 2017; with the bulldog determination to defy all odds; void and devoid of what might befall him; he joined National politics and registeresd as an Independent Candidate. The results were not good music to his ears as he came distant last with 24 votes.
Hon PK's desire to lead residents of Mumias East did not flicker out despite the loss.
He embarked on serious campagns spurred on by a campagn slogan of 'Omwana Omumanani' which loosely translated to; Time for those wretched in poverty; victims of endemic poverty wallowing in napalms of starvation to lead; was due.
This was a clinical move hatched by think tanks of Hon Salasya that targeted the then incumbent Hon Benjamin Washiali who he alleged was mismanaging the Constituency.
His stump speeches and a proper detailed manifesto that resonated well with the masses made him a darling to the Youths his age and Women voters.
He ultimately floored Hon David Wamatsi of ANC Party who garnered 9043 votes; Dr Benson Makokha of UDA who came third with 5, 118 votes as he himself on DAP K ticket got 12, 140 votes.
What happened after Hon PK took over the reigns of leadership?
Did he behave like a Mortar; which when food comes its way- it turns it's back on the ground?
Is Hon Salasya; a leader who stuffs his head in the sand like the proverbial Ostrich- and offer a deaf ear to the pleas, plights and teething challenges the electorates are wallowing through?
Was he simply a Sheep during the just concluded campagns; only to turn into a hound that is baying for his subjects' blood through con artistry and negligence of first degree services required by residents?
The Pros.
Education;
For the short stint at the helm of leadership; Hon Salasya can be lauded over his progress to promote the Education Sector. A majority of High School, College and University learners had a reason to smile after they capitalised and benefitted from the Constituency Development Funding module instituted by the Constituency Boss; which was glorified and waxed lyrical of based on the Transparency displayed in distributing the funds.
Girl child Support Programs.
Hon Salasya's administration has been supporting Girl child programs by issuance of Sanitary pads to mitigate and curb the discomforts and arrays of challenges that befall girls who lack the pass.
Infrastructure Development and Social Amenities.
It should go without mentioning that modern ablution blocks have been constructed in a number of schools to improve Sanitation.
Most Schools are experiencing face lifts through renovations and scaling up learning facilities by building new modern laboratories.
His efforts in improving the status of impassable roads and bridges is commendable.
Nurturing Talents.
Nurturing of vast talents in residents of Mumias East has been at the central plank on his agenda too.
The PK Salasya Classic Tournament has gained popularity recently due to the glamour; the aplomb of its ilk and prizes forthwith. The Youths who participated in various games like Football, Volleyball etc eke living from it.
Cons.
Not all that glitters is Gold.
It should be noted that Wealth Wealth effortlessly gained might cloud one's vision with scales of negligence and bar them from focusing beyond their noses.
This wealth; effortlessly amassed, might lure away reason and bribe one's emotions on the paths of temper tantrums- that might coax one into making self centred and unilateral decisions all to the detriment of the subjects you purport to lead.
This; from the sources I interacted with, is the foundation on which the incumbent's leadership has been cast into the limelight for subverting the laws of the land and breaking these laws at all costs and climes.
But What makes many leaders and a section of voters point fingers at Hon PK?
Let's dive into it:
The Public Figure Test.
Since ascending to power, Hon Salasya has been on everyone's lips as regards to his conduct in the public domains. For a leader of his cadre and ilk, the masses have been waiting with bated breath for the spinning coin to turn in their favour and experience a shift in behaviours, of their revered Honourable Legislator.
The whining of the waist in public as he binges the liquor; nefarious antics; imprintable epithets he hurls at his political opponents on Social media platforms, flogging and threatening people has continued to dent his image as it only worked to skirmish his name in public.
Muddled Leadership Skills.
Holes have been poked into his leadership style. A while ago; a section of CDF Committee members lamented that the Constituency boss did not offer them appointment letters as required. It was even alleged that employees with contrasting ideologies could face the axe for speaking out their mind.
Additionally;
It's been registered that Mheshimiwa does not work in tandem with the County administration. He is not ready to pool his thoughts together with the County leadership; so that their concerted efforts will work to impact positively lives of Mumias East Constituency.
How many times has he been on record calling out Governor Fernandes Barasa on leaked audio tapes over shoddy deals for his own personal gain?
How comes he never sees eye to eye with Lubinu Lubinu Lusheya WARD MCA Hon Timothy Wanzetse?
Can he share a table with Malaha Isongo Makunga Ward MCA Hon Walunya and deliberate on matters that concern the ward?
Amongst other vices that continue to warrant Hon PK slim chances of re-election is his ego that he needs to work on before the his political boat capsize and drown him into obscurity.
As a result of all this; a number of leaders perceive Mumias East leadership as below par and it's the reason they're flocking the political arena to unseat the incumbent.
The leaders listed herein conform to Constitutional tenets of Eligibility in running for an elective office and we shall skim and scan through their profiles with a toothpick; consign their strength and leave it to you the reader make a resolute choice on who to back up in the 2027 polls.
